The idea for Native In Me clothing originated 13 years ago. Following a conversation with a friend who said he would never publicly disclose his heritage and having studied psychology, I was very keen to see if other people felt the same. At the time I had lofty dreams of undertaking a mega-research around the topic with over a hundred participants. In the end the research took place in a bar amongst 4 friends and 2 strangers. Not bad, considering the limited resources available. I spoke to a few other people picking up many comments about culture, heritage, background, nationality and identity. My informal findings showed that many are proud of their origins but may not express themselves unless prompted. My belief then and now remains the same; it doesn’t matter where you live now, it doesn’t matter where you were born, it doesn’t matter that you speak different languages with an accent or that you cannot speak the languages of your great grandparents; you should be proud of who you are. Be British, Be African, Be Asian, Be American, Be South American, Be European, Be a mix, Be YOU!
